Anna

I take deep breaths, unable to believe my run-in with Chloe. I wasn’t lying when I said she was a mean girl. She teased and tormented me about always having a bodyguard in the near vicinity. Normally we couldn’t see them, but we all knew one was there. My heart starts to settle as Alek lets the conversation go, and I’m grateful he’s not pressing. I just want to go away this weekend and have a nice time at his lakeside hideout, where I don’t have to keep looking over my shoulder. I can’t remember the last time I was able to relax and let go.

I remain quiet as we drive back to his parents’ place to pick up Chase and every now and then, I feel his eyes on me. We reach his parents’ estate, and the gate opens for us. After he parks, he casts me a glance and I pull my phone from my pocket, pretending I have more messages to answer.

“I’ll just be a sec, okay.”

I nod. It’s not like I’m anxious to meet his parents, and it’s clear he doesn’t want me to, otherwise he would have invited me in when we were here earlier. Maybe he thinks they’ll interrogate me or something. Sitting here is all for the best. The fewer people who know me the better, and I’ll be getting out of Dodge soon enough.

I scroll through my phone, and my finger hovers over the screen. Should I respond to my parents? I had numerous messages from them, and while I did once tell them I was okay—not to worry about me—I’m not sure if I should send any more messages.

Alek comes back with Chase and he’s excited as he climbs into the car, and from around the corner, I spot a man standing there watching us, his gaze alert, and the hairs on my neck tingle in warning. I know that stance, that look.

“Is that your father?” I ask.

“No, just a friend of the family.”

He doesn’t elaborate, and I don’t push it. I guess we all have our own secrets. Chase talks about his grandfather buying him a turtle and Alek just rolls his eyes at me.

“My parents spoil him.”

“That’s good.” I turn to smile at Chase and as I take in his features, my heart squeezes. He looks so much like his father. Once again, I wonder about his mother but I don’t ask. “Kids should be spoiled by their grandparents,” I say.

He laughs. “Yeah, you say that now. Wait until you have kids of your own, and you start losing control.”

While I’m not the girlie girl who dreams of big weddings, I have given some thought to having kids of my own. “I’m not planning on having kids.”

His gaze jerks to mine. “Oh, that surprises me.”

“Why is that?”

He checks his side mirror before passing a slow vehicle as he turns onto the highway. “You’re so good with Chase, and with Sophie.”

I nod. “I didn’t say I didn’t like kids. I just don’t plan to have any.
